Our network doesn't use a VPN. But because many residents share the same internet connection at your property, some schools and streaming services see a large number of connections coming from one place and mistake it for a VPN or proxy.
School email, Microsoft 365 or other school systems are blocked
Some schools block sign-ins to private resources when they detect a lot of connections from one internet address. You may get an alert from your school's IT or security team saying a VPN was detected, sometimes naming Student Housing Technologies.
Only your school can fix this, by adding our internet address range to its allowlist:
- Contact us by submitting a request. Include your property and, if you have it, the alert email from your school. We'll reply with your property's IP address range.
- Send the alert and our IP range to your school's IT help desk and ask them to allowlist it. We contact school IT teams too when we can, but requests from students are usually handled fastest.
If you use a VPN app yourself, turn it off and try again. Until your school makes the change, your phone's cellular data or a hotspot will let you sign in.
A streaming service says you're using a VPN or proxy
Streaming services sometimes flag our connection as a VPN or proxy for the same reason, even though it isn't one. If you see an error like this:
- Turn off any VPN or proxy app on your device, then close and reopen the streaming app.
- If the error continues, submit a request with the name of the service, the exact error message and your property, so we can look into it.
